How can I tell if my smoke detector/alarm is working correctly

Categories: Fire Department Fire

Smoke alarms should be tested at least once a month. If a smoke detector begins to make a chirping or beeping sound, it is time to replace the battery. All smoke detectors have a test button that you push to test the alarm. If there is no sound, replace the battery and retest. If the alarm still does not sound, replace the smoke detector with a new one.If the test button does not operate properly, the alarm should be replaced.Never use open flame devices to test an alarm.

The Novi Fire Department believes every person should have smoke detectors in their home. If you live in the City of Novi and you cannot obtain a smoke detector (or if you are unable to buy one) the Fire Department will install a smoke detector free of charge. This program is possible because of the donations of valuable corporate partners within the City of Novi who provide the Fire Department these “life-savers” for free. If you do not live in the City of Novi, call your local fire department and ask about a free smoke detector.

According to FEMA, several studies have concluded that when working smoke alarms are present, the chance of death resulting from fire is cut in half.Smoke detectors have saved thousands of lives, but several problems exist.First, 12% of homes without alarms have more than half of the fires.Second, it is estimated that 1/3 of smoke alarms are not working properly - often due to failure to replace a worn out battery.Third, many homes do not have as many smoke alarms as are needed to protect the occupants properly. Please make sure your smoke detectors are working properly
